Join the fun at the Redwood Valley Outdoor Education Project! Adults and families are invited to participate in an array of special interest outdoor education workshops at the RVOEP. Come learn about the night sky or enjoy a hike with one of our guest naturalists as you explore the flora and fauna of this unique and beautiful 45 acre Oak, Madrone, and Douglas Fir woodland. Workshops are free to RVOEP members. A donation of $2.00 is requested from non-members. Most workshops will be held weather permitting. The RVOEP is located at 8301 Pinecrest Drive in Redwood Valley. Pinecrest Drive begins directly across from Redwood Valley Elementary School.

Birdhouse Workshop
Saturday, November 7, 1:00 to 3:00 - Give your friends a new house for Christmas!
Dave Bengston, Peregrine Audubon Chapter Education Chair, will give participants some tips and tricks for building successful nesting boxes. Dave has been building birdhouses for years. He knows just what each species of cavity nester likes, how to build it, and where to put it to attract birds. Dave will share a variety of house plans and participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at building a nesting box to take home with them. All ages are welcome, but an adult must accompany children. Dress warm. Building supplies are limited, so feel free to bring your own board (1 in. x 6 in. x 4 ft. or longer). Fall Mushroom Walk
Sunday, December 6, 10:00 to noon
Mark Albert will guide us through the fascinating world of mushrooms. Come learn about the essential role that fungus play in an Oak Woodland ecosystem and meet some of our local mushrooms. Mark usually brings an array of mushrooms to share and participants will have the opportunity to explore the mixed woodlands at the RVOEP to see what mushrooms are up. Beginning mushroom enthusiasts and veterans should find this a stimulating morning.
Night Camp at the RVOEP
Tentative date: Saturday, April 24, 7:30 to 10:00 PM
Explore nature after dark at the RVOEP. Call Great Horned Owls, learn to identify the constellations, hear ancient myths and legends about the stars, and investigate the unique adaptations of nocturnal animals.
This is a family activity for students engaged in keeping Moon Journals as an integrated science and language arts activity. We may be able to accommodate a few more people, so if you are interested please register ahead by calling 485-0690. Children must be 8 years old or older and accompanied by an adult. Please park at Redwood Valley Elementary School.
Spring Hike with a Naturalist
Saturday, May 1, 10:00 AM to noon, at the RVOEP
Springtime means beautiful wildflowers and a symphony of sounds as migrating birds find their way back to their favorite nesting areas. Marisela de Santa Anna will guide us in a walk that will highlight wildflowers and native plants as well as birds. Marisela is a well-known local naturalist with a broad background of knowledge about Mendocino County flora and fauna. Her walks are always fun and informative.
